Children’s National Medical Center Teams with National Kidney Foundation
March 10, 2008

For Immediate Release: March 10, 2008

Contact: Paula Darte, Emily Dammeyer, 202-476-4500

Washington, DC – March 13 is World Kidney Day, and to mark the day in Washington, DC, the National Kidney Foundation of the National Capital Area is partnering with Children’s National Medical Center to reach out to children and teens to help them share their experiences living with chronic disease and complex treatment.

“I’ve been on dialysis most of my life and a lot of people don’t realize how many kids are waiting for transplants,” said Tyrone King Armstead, 18, who is currently on dialysis waiting for a kidney transplant. “Organ donation can help give kids a huge opportunity to lead a normal life.”

World Kidney Day is sponsored by the National Kidney Foundation, a voluntary health organization that seeks to raise awareness about organ donation and helps patients with kidney disease cope. Speakers from the Foundation will talk to Children’s National patients, families and friends about living with kidney disease, and also will hear from patients and families about their coping strategies.

Facts:
  • When an individual's kidneys fail, treatment options include dialysis or kidney transplantation.
  • Kidneys can be transplanted from live donors or from donors who are deceased.
  • At Children’s National Medical Center, about 12 children are receiving dialysis for kidney failure while they wait to receive kidney transplants.
Contact: To arrange interviews with Pediatric Nephrologist Mona Khurana, MD, or with a Children’s National patient receiving treatment, contact Emily Dammeyer or Paula Darte at 202-476-4500.
