Children’s National Medical Center Receives Pediatric Echocardiography Accreditation

For Immediate Release: April 8, 2008

Contact: Emily Dammeyer, 202-476-4500

Washington, DC— Children’s National Medical Center’s Echocardiography Laboratory has been accredited in three areas of pediatrics, one of less than 25 labs across the country to receive such a distinction. Children’s National received accreditation in pediatric echocardiography, pediatric transesophageal echocardiography and fetal echocardiography.

Children’s National received accreditation for its main hospital location, as well as all its Regional Outpatient Centers, located throughout metropolitan Washington. It is the only pediatric lab in the Washington region to receive accreditation within all three areas of pediatrics.

“Our accreditation is a testament to our longstanding commitment to excellence and quality care for children,” said pediatric cardiologist Craig Sable, MD, director of Echocardiography at Children’s National.

“Accreditation assures families that we strive to be the best, constantly challenging ourselves to assure that we continue to achieve a standard of excellence using state-of-the-art technology,” adds Mary Donofrio, MD, Director, Fetal Heart Program. “This holds true for both our pediatric and fetal programs at Children’s National.”

Children’s National Medical Center has one of the busiest echo labs in the country, performing more than 14,000 studies annually. Children’s developed one of the first digital echocardiography laboratories in the world and remains a leader in the development of new technologies to optimize patient care. The digital echocardiography laboratory makes it seamless for physicians throughout the region, country and world to instantly send Children’s cardiologists echocardiograms for review 24/7 at any location.

The team includes nationally recognized cardiologists and experienced pediatric sonographers. Combined with the state-of-the-art digital echo lab, Children’s National’s team ensures the highest quality and accuracy for patients and families.

Accreditation by the Intersocietal Commission for the Accreditation of Echocardiography Laboratories (ICAEL) involves a rigorous, voluntary evaluation of all aspects of the Echocardiography lab, including quality and completeness of studies, quality assurance and competence of the team. ICAEL is an independent agency that works to monitor and improve the quality of echocardiography diagnostic evaluations.
