Children’s Hosts Burn Prevention Fair
MEDIA ADVISORY
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: October 3, 2008
Through collaborative partnerships, Children’s hopes to reduce number of patients needing treatment for burns
WHAT: Children’s National Medical Center will host a Burn Prevention Fair to raise awareness about the growing number of burns from normal household activities. Through a partnership with the DC Firefighters Burn Foundation, DC Fire and Emergency Medical Services, Washington Hospital Center, and Safe Kids Worldwide, the Burn Prevention Fair is being held during Fire Prevention Week.
The fair will include information for parents and caregivers, smoke detectors (for DC residents), tub temperature testers, oven mitts and sticks, educational giveaways, an interactive obstacle course teaching fire escape safety, and other fun activities with firefighters’ gear.
WHY: Children’s National Medical Center treats many children with burns each year. Last year, Children’s treated nearly 600 patients. This year, Children’s has already seen more than 300 children with burns. Approximately 80 percent of the children treated had scald burns.
Curling irons and electrical injuries can cause burns, but most are a result of hot stoves, hot liquids, hot noodles, as well as frying pans, and crock pots. Treadmills can also cause burns.
