The Department of Nursing Education and Professional Development and the unit/department nurse educators provide education and training for nurse development throughout the Division of Nursing. Children’s National Medical Center nurses also participate in educational activities in the community.
Children’s Department Of Nursing Education and Professional Development supports professional nurses through a comprehensive hospital orientation program, nursing orientation, and unit/department orientation programs. This includes a centralized orientation program offered to all RN’s, a dedicated new graduate internship program offered to support the transition of the new graduate throughout the entire first year, a mentoring program, preceptor education, and specific educational programs to support clinical practice.
The Department of Nursing Education and Professional Development uses Children’s Nursing Professional Practice Model core tenets of Partners In Care, Neuman’s Theory, Evidence- Based Nursing and Shared Nursing Leadership consistent with Children’s mission of CARE (Clinical Care, Advocacy, Research and Education) and recognizes the Patient –Family Centered Care Framework as the core value of the nursing practice model to organize the scope of the programs facilitated by the department to support the Registered Nurses pediatric nursing practice. The essential and fundamental programs include: orientation programs, preceptor and mentoring programs, clinical practice development programs, and ongoing educational opportunities for mentor and leadership development, and academic partnerships.
Education Congress
A working group known as the ‘Education Congress’, is the mechanism by which Children’s National Nursing Education and Professional development manages the complex learning needs offered internally for professional nurses. The purpose of the Educational Congress is to provide the opportunity for mutually negotiated, systematic educational program planning, implementation, and evaluation. The Congress reflects the belief that inclusiveness and diversity of perspectives yield the highest quality, best valued, and most comprehensive educational programming. Participants come from many roles and settings.
