Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU)

The Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) is a 32-bed unit that serves as a regional referral center, and is a designated Level I Trauma Center for comprehensive care to pediatric patients and their families. The 32 beds include a 4 bed Neurosurgical Intensive Care Unit for children with complex neurosurgical needs. Children’s National also is a regional referral center for extracorporeal life support (ECMO). Pediatric patients requiring ECMO are cared for in the PICU. The PICU Patient Care Management Team, including highly-specialized nurses, coordinates interdisciplinary patient assessment in conjunction with multiple specialty services.
