Emergency Medicine and Trauma Center (EMTC)

Nurse Manager
Margaret Burridge, BSN, RN, CPN

The Emergency Medicine Trauma Center is a 34-bed, tertiary care, Level I pediatric trauma center. The Center provides screening and emergency care for over 75,000 patients per year with a wide range of needs including emergent and non-emergent conditions.  A triage nurse is the first point of contact for all self-presenting patients.  The nurses in the EMTC are trained in Triage, Trauma and Emergency care of children. Many of the nurses are certified in pediatrics, emergency nursing, or critical care nursing.  The EMTC is comprised of:

Fast Track: Fast Track provides care to patients with non-emergent conditions and is staffed by MDs, NPs, RNs and ED Tech Specialists.

Evaluation and Treatment Unit: ETU is an 8 bed monitored unit. The unit is intended for patients who require ongoing evaluation and treatment to determine disposition.

Decontamination Unit: This area is designed to accommodate large volumes of patient influx with possible exposure to harmful materials. EMTC staff has been trained in decontamination procedures. The state of the art facility includes 18 decontamination showers, several exam and consult rooms, and direct elevator access to isolation areas in the inpatient units.

Nurses in the EMTC participate in required training, including:
  • Nurse orientation program providing segmented learning
  • Comprehensive orientation and mentoring program for new nurses with special emphasis on training for newly graduated nurses
  • On-going training related to trauma, emergency pediatric care, disaster/decontamination, safe practices, and team-building
  • Certification preparation
