Kohl’s Community Asthma Program

Thank to generous funding support by Kohl’s, Children’s National Medical Center is raising awareness of asthma and providing education and prevention resources to families throughout the Washington metropolitan area. Kohl’s funding supports community outreach including our mobile health program and the IMPACT DC program, which is dedicated to improving asthma care and outcomes for children through clinical care, education, research, and advocacy.

A disproportionately high number of children suffer from asthma in the District of Columbia. One of main goals of our asthma program is to lessen the need for emergency room visits and hospital stays by educating patients and families about ways to manage the condition, and connecting them with valuable resources in the community.

Public Awareness
The Kohl’s Community Asthma Program helps build awareness of asthma through a multi-channel campaign including radio spots, newspaper ads, and bus shelter billboards with asthma messages.

Education and Training
Because hospital staff and primary care clinic staff have such an important role in caring for children with asthma, we offer education sessions to hospital and community-based nurses, respiratory therapists, and clinicians. In these sessions we focus on how to provide high-quality asthma education to families; the importance of having asthma action plans on file in school or daycare for all children; and the use of national guidelines to improve the health and quality of life for kids with asthma. We have also implemented an asthma curriculum in several DC public and charter schools.

School nurses are also an incredible resource for families with school-aged children. We work with school nurses to provide training, share educational materials, and discuss the process for referring families to our asthma clinic.

Community Events
Children’s National staff participates throughout the year in community outreach, providing information through health fairs, school-based programs, and other educational and advocacy events. These include parent education sessions, the NBC4 Health & Expo, World Asthma Day, and other health fairs and community events.
