Community Outreach and Education Programs

Impact DC logo

IMPACT DC is committed to increasing asthma awareness and providing evidence-based asthma education throughout the District of Columbia.

Areas of focus for our outreach strategy (2011-2012)

Focused School Education.
This year IMPACT DC will “adopt” three elementary schools from the DC Public School, along with six Friendship Public Charter Schools. At each of these schools we will work closely with students, parents and teachers throughout the year, holding multiple events to provide and reinforce asthma education.

School Nurse Education. School nurses are an incredible resource for families with school-aged children. We plan to continue our work with school nurses by meeting one-on-one to provide refresher training, share educational materials and discuss the process for referring families to the IMPACT DC Asthma Clinic.

Health Care Provider Education. Because hospital staff and primary care clinic/office staff have such an important role in caring for children with asthma, IMPACT DC is now offering education sessions to hospital and community based nurses, respiratory therapists, and clinicians. In these sessions we focus on: how to provide high quality asthma education to families, the importance of having Asthma Action Plans on file in school or daycare for all children, and the use of national guidelines to improve the health and quality of life for kids with asthma.

In addition to these activities, IMPACT DC will continue to participate in community events, with an emphasis on those affiliated with Children's National Medical Center, Friendship Public Charter Schools and other partner organizations.

If you are interested in learning more about the current Outreach IMPACT DC mission, our upcoming outreach events, or if you would like to receive educational handouts or our newsletter please contact us at 202.476.3970 or impactdc@childrensnational.org.
We are grateful for the generous funding from Kohl's and the Stewart Trust that enabled us to accomplish the following community outreach and education during the 2010-2011 school year:
  • Implemented an evidence-based asthma curriculum in 11 DC Public and Charter Schools reaching a total of 272 students.
  • Conducted 12 DC School Nurse training sessions and 19 parent education sessions.
  • Provided education sessions for 219 Health Care Providers in the DC Community.
  • Participated in 8 health fairs (including the NBC 4 Heath Expo) and 15 additional community awareness events (including Take your Daughter to Work Day and the Breathe DC Asthma Walk).
