Focused School Education. This year IMPACT DC will “adopt” three elementary schools from the DC Public School, along with six Friendship Public Charter Schools. At each of these schools we will work closely with students, parents and teachers throughout the year, holding multiple events to provide and reinforce asthma education.
School Nurse Education. School nurses are an incredible resource for families with school-aged children. We plan to continue our work with school nurses by meeting one-on-one to provide refresher training, share educational materials and discuss the process for referring families to the IMPACT DC Asthma Clinic.
Health Care Provider Education. Because hospital staff and primary care clinic/office staff have such an important role in caring for children with asthma, IMPACT DC is now offering education sessions to hospital and community based nurses, respiratory therapists, and clinicians. In these sessions we focus on: how to provide high quality asthma education to families, the importance of having Asthma Action Plans on file in school or daycare for all children, and the use of national guidelines to improve the health and quality of life for kids with asthma.
In addition to these activities, IMPACT DC will continue to participate in
community events, with an emphasis on those affiliated with Children's National Medical Center, Friendship Public Charter Schools and other partner organizations.
