Children’s School Services
Children’s School Services School Health Program is a partnership with the District of Columbia Department of Health (DOH) that employs nearly 200 nurses who provide health services to the 49,000 students enrolled in the District of Columbia Public Schools (DCPS).
The program’s mission is to enhance education by maximizing the health and well-being of youth in the District’s public schools. Recognizing the diversity of the student population, nurses work with school personnel, medical health personnel, families and the community to minimize and eliminate health-related barriers to learning.
The CSS School Health Program’s vision is to be a nationally recognized model that leverages expertise and resources from various stakeholders in the public and private sector, including healthcare providers, government officials, educators, families, and youth advocates. Specifically, the program:
- Empowers students and families through prevention, early detection, intervention, and health education.
- Establishes a foundation that encourages the promotion and maintenance of a lifetime of optimal health and well-being.
The CSS School Health Program is an integral part of the It’s Wise to Immunize campaign, which is dedicated to increasing immunization rates in DCPS students. Since the CSS School Health Program joined the campaign in the 2000-2001 school year, immunization rates have increased from 40 percent to 95 percent in June of 2006. The rate is now higher than the national average.
