Children’s National Unveils New Helipad
More than 200 feet above Washington, DC, Children’s National unveiled a new helipad that has state-of-the-art safety and security features for enhanced operations. The helipad was debuted Monday, September 10, when President and CEO Kurt Newman, MD, cut the ribbon.
Children’s National Opens Kosher Pantry
On August 31, Children’s National opened a pantry to give families who keep kosher a dedicated place to eat prepared kosher meals and snacks while they are in the hospital visiting or staying with their children.

Dental Services Offered In Prince George's County
On March 28, Children’s National Medical Center began offering preventative oral care services at a mobile health unit hosted by Benjamin Stoddert Middle School in Temple Hills, Maryland.
Cardiac ICU Opens a new spacious facility
Opening December 13, 2011, this new state-of-the-art 34,000 square foot Cardiac ICU features 26 beds and private patient rooms with space designed to provide optimal family-centered care.
Blood and Marrow Transplantation Opens a New Outpatient Unit
The Blood and Marrow Transplantation (BMT) team is expanding our ability to serve patients and families who do not need to stay over-night. The new Outpatient Unit opened on November 29, 2011.
Children’s National Imaging at the Montgomery County Regional Outpatient Center
In the fall of 2011, Children’s National opened an outpatient radiology facility in Rockville, Md. Features of this child-friendly facility include:
Specialized staff to include a Board Certified Pediatric Radiologist, a Board Certified Pediatric Anesthesiologist, Registered Pediatric Radiologic Technologists, and Certified Pediatric Nurses.
A full-time Child Life Specialist, who is highly trained in addressing the developmental and psychosocial needs of patients and families to facilitate increased coping during potentially stressful imaging procedures.
A Spanish-speaking receptionist to facilitate communication with patients and families.
State-of-the-art equipment using the latest low dose technology to ensure optimal utilization of modern imaging techniques with a pediatric population.
Children’s National Opens 7 New Operating Rooms
In July 2011, Children’s National opened seven new operating rooms (ORs) that will augment the team’s ability to do more complex procedures in a family-centered environment. The new ORs are large to accommodate new technology, such as robotic surgery, and enhance the team’s ability to provide education and training. The ORs are part of a phased overhaul to the entire OR suites. Once complete in 2012, there will be a total of 17 operating rooms and two GI procedure rooms. Children’s Opens East Inpatient Tower
Floors 6 and 7 Children’s National continues to grow and expand our physical space to provide the best world-class care to patients. In winter 2010, Children’s National will open floors 6 and 7 in the East Inpatient tower, which are the final floors in the phased transition to the new Tower which began in November 2007.
Children’s National To Open Satellite Emergency Department
Children’s National announces the completion of construction on its new satellite emergency department at United Medical Center on Southern Avenue, SE. This state-of-the-art, full-service emergency department will be open to serve the community in fall 2010.
Children’s National Opens New Blood Donor Center
On June 18, 2009, Children’s National Medical Center dedicated a new Edward J. Miller, Sr., Blood Donor Center, which provides an invaluable service to many patients who need blood products. Children’s National is one of a handful of children’s hospitals nationwide to have an in-house blood donor center.
Children’s Expands NICU Facilities
On May 17, 2009, Children’s National Medical Center opens a state-of-the-art 54 bed Neonatal Intensive Care Unit on the 6th floor of the East Inpatient Tower. The new unit is approximately four times larger than the current space, which admits more than 800 patients annually.
Children’s Expands Surgical Services
Children’s National Medical Center recently opened two state-of-the-art operating rooms, increasing the hospital’s capacity to provide surgical services to children. Children’s also opened an expanded waiting area for families whose children are having surgery.
Children's Expands Research Facilities Children’s Research Institute (CRI) has expanded to increase research space atop the main Children’s National building. This expansion allows researchers to better serve families with world-class bench to bedside care.
East Inpatient Tower
Children’s is proud to announce the opening of new East Inpatient Tower. The new Patient Tower is part of our continuing commitment in transforming children's health. The new Patient Tower officially opened November 18, 2007. The multimillion-dollar project enhances the expert, family-centered care at Children’s.
