The Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders is a vibrant and multifaceted unit of Children’s National Medical Center. Over the past few years it has grown considerably to encompass eight divisions:
The Center for Cancer and Blood Disorder’s team is committed to giving all who are entrusted to its care, the very best care it can. For many this means curing a devastating disease. In the last few years, the team has begun curing patients with sickle cell disease, thalassemia, immunologic disorders, and metabolic diseases. The center’s specialists have contributed to increased cure rates for numerous childhood cancers and other diseases and are dedicated to expanding the number of diseases that can be cured.
When a cure is unlikely, the team remains committed to excellence in care, an approach that has increased the life expectancy and dramatically improved the quality of life of many patients.
Patients treated by the center have access to more than 100 clinical trials. The center’s specialists serve as study chairs for several of these national and international clinical trials. Children’s is also the only center in the region and one of only a handful in the country with access to Children’s Oncology Group’s Phase I trials and Pediatric Brain Tumor Consortium protocols.
When a child has a serious illness, it affects everyone in the family — and Children’s team cares for them all. The center’s Patient and Family Support Program provides comprehensive psychosocial and mental health services for patients, their parents and siblings.
