Educational Programs
Building the Future of Pediatric Surgical Care
Education is an integral part of the Sheikh Zayed Institute’s mission. The Institute invites the next generation of surgeons, physicians, scientists, nurses, and engineers to participate in the innovative thinking underway at the Institute today.
Educational programs in the theory, practice, and management of biomedical innovation are available for:
-
high school, college, and graduate students
-
clinicians, researchers, and engineers at all career levels
These programs immerse the innovation minded in the art and science of developing new approaches to making surgery for children more precise, less invasive, and pain free. Every participant is expected to engage actively in the ongoing activities of the Institute, including attending conferences, lectures, clinical rounds, journal clubs, and laboratory meetings along with members of the Institute.
Early Career Opportunities
Training for young innovators focuses on the multi-disciplinary approaches that move cutting-edge ideas from concept to product development and implementation. Early career opportunities include:
Mid- and Established Career Opportunities
For experienced innovators, a series of programs offer U.S. and international leaders in biomedical, pediatric, and surgical innovation the opportunity to share experiences, knowledge, and creative thinking. These programs include:
Visiting Investigators
The Visiting Investigators program invites promising investigators in biomedical, pediatric, and surgical innovation to spend at least six months actively engaged in the Institute’s research efforts. They will normally be associated with one of the four principal initiatives: pain medicine, immunology, systems biology, and bioengineering. However, depending on experience and expertise, Visiting Investigators may also contribute to multi-initiative work and projects that span and support the entire Institute.
Visiting Innovators
The Visiting Innovator program invites outstanding, active innovators in biomedicine and pediatrics to join the Institute team in discussions about the challenges of innovation and pathways to success. Designed as a short-term appointment, the Visiting Innovators will lecture in their area of expertise and participate in case discussions, didactic sessions, and symposia on modern biomedical innovation. Visiting Innovators typically spend two to three days at the Institute and are recognized by both the Institute and Children’s National for their contributions.
Innovators-in-Residence
Experienced, senior innovators in biomedical studies are invited to spend one to two weeks inspiring, teaching, and consulting on pediatric surgical innovations. Innovators-in-Residence actively participate in seminars, case discussions, lectures, and laboratory meetings of the Institute and Children’s National. Sharing their extensive experience and knowledge of biomedical innovation developments with the emerging generation of pediatric surgical innovators establishes a legacy of creativity and vision that is carried into the future of pediatric surgical care. Innovators-in-Residence receive special honor and recognition across Children’s National.
