About the Gift

Ambassador Youssef, Joe Robert

The creation of the Sheikh Zayed Institute for Pediatric Surgical Innovation was made possible by a $150 million gift from the government of of Abu Dhabi, representing a shared vision to significantly and measurably advance medical innovation to create healthier and safer surgical outcomes for children worldwide.

The gift is the largest ever for pediatric surgery, and one of the largest gifts to a children’s hospital. Most of the gift -- $125 million -- will cover the staff, facilities, and technology needed to enable the most advanced care and research in the area of pediatric surgery, including $25 million for an endowment to support the Institute. The remaining $25 million will be devoted to institutional priorities as designated by the Board of Directors at Children's National.

Children’s National Medical Center has a longstanding relationship with the United Arab Emirates and treats many UAE patients every year.  The advances in pediatric medicine made at t he Sheikh Zayed Institute for Pediatric Surgical Innovation will have an impact on the children in Washington, in the UAE, and across the globe.

Sheikh Zayed

The government of Abu Dhabi made the gift in honor of His Highness Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the founder of the United Arab Emirates and the country’s president from 1971 until his death in 2004.  Gifts have been made in Sheikh Zayed’s name to several other institutions, including Johns Hopkins Medicine and the Cleveland Clinic.

In addition to naming the Institute for Sheikh Zayed, the main campus of Children’s National Medical Center will be named the Sheikh Zayed Campus for Advanced Pediatric Medicine.
