Observership Program at Children's National Medical Center

The International Program of Children’s National Medical Center in Washington, DC, offers an Observership Program for international physicians who wish to gain knowledge in specific pediatric medical and surgical subspecialties.

The Observership Program is a unique 4-week educational experience in which participants learn from world-renowned pediatric physicians and get a firsthand look of the workings of a destination pediatric medical and research institution.

The International Program works with interested parties to personalize the Observership Program to fit educational goals. Although the Observership Program does not offer direct patient care, participants are included as a part of the team and partake in numerous didactic and clinical sessions.

Children’s National offers Observership opportunities in pediatric subspecialties within the following divisions:

Cardiology and Cardiovascular Surgery
Orthopaedic Surgery
General Surgery
Hematology/Oncology
Neurology
Pediatric Hospital Medicine
Infections Disease
Gastroenterology
Critical Care: Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, and Cardiac Intensive Care Unit

When the participant has completed the 4-week Observership Program, he/she will receive a certificate of completion to add to his/her continuing education portfolio.

Tuition: $2,000

How to Apply:

To be considered for the Observership Program, applicants must write a personal statement explaining:
1. The subspecialty in which you would like to gain more expertise
2. How you could use the learned techniques/expertise to further medical care in your homeland
3. Your availability for temporary lodging in the United States

Applicants must also provide the following information:
• A copy of up-to-date PPD test results
• Immunization record

The International Program can assist Observers in obtaining a visitor’s visa.

Additionally, applicants must complete a Children’s National Medical Center Orientation Packet.
