Project CHAMP

Project CHAMP (Children's HIV and AIDS Model Program) is one of the area's largest providers of support and services for children living with HIV infection and AIDS. Project CHAMP's Respite Buddy and Mentor Programs give volunteers the unique opportunity to be a friend not only to a child or adolescent, but to an entire family who perhaps just weeks or months ago learned that a family member was diagnosed with HIV.

Project CHAMP has three very distinct roles from which a volunteer can choose:

Long-Term Buddy
  • Matched with one family, a child or children between 3 and 13 years of age.
  • Plan fun activities for the child(ren) away from the home. Activities can include visiting a local park or going to the movies.
  • Must commit to spending an average of eight to ten hours per month with the child(ren) and remain with the family for one year.
Mentor Buddy
  • Matched with an adolescent or young adult between 13 and 21 years of age.
  • Plan and accompany the adolescent or young adult to activities and outings.
  • Identify long and short term goals with mentee, outlining steps to meet these goals.
  • Address issues of self esteem/self image, assist with homework and help the mentee seek and apply for employment and college admission.
Short-Term Buddy
  • Transport and accompany the child or children to and from medical appointments when the parent or caregiver needs respite.
  • May work with several families a year.
If interested in becoming a buddy or mentor, please see the requirements.
