Refer a Patient
Any physician, health professional or healthcare agency may refer a patient to Children’s specialty services at the Hospital or Regional Outpatient Centers.
Children’s has materials available to assist referring physicians. To receive a Physician Referral Kit containing a directory of services, referral pad and laminated quick-reference card, contact 202-476-4500 or tbear@childrensnational.org.
Children's Directory of Services is available for download and is a detailed reference guide of all Children's specialists and services.
Children’s Referral Pad is a quick reference that lists directions to Children’s facilities and the clinical services offered at Children’s Regional Outpatient Centers.
Patients are admitted to Children’s Hospital through ambulatory clinics, the Emergency Department or by direct referral. Referring physicians have complete access to the clinical progress of their patients and are encouraged to visit their patients during their hospital stay.
Inquiries about admitting a patient should be directed to the full-time staff physician responsible for the patient’s care or to the medical or surgical residents who are on duty 24 hours a day. Referring physicians may, at any time, call Children’s Lifeline, our emergency referral phone number, 202-476-LIFE.
At Children’s, we believe services should be accessible to all persons regardless of handicaps or disabilities. Sign and foreign language interpreters, TTY phones and handicap parking spaces on level P-1 are some of the services provided. Physicians are asked to call in advance if their patients require assistance in coming to the hospital.
Physician Relations
Children’s Physician Relations program serves as the liaison between community physicians and the many services and resources of Children’s. Referring physicians are encouraged to contact this office and the physician concierge with questions or concerns. The program also is responsible for distributing resources to keep referring physicians informed about Children’s programs.
For more information contact 202-476-4418.
