Fellowship Training in Fetal and Transitional Medicine
The Division of Fetal and Transitional Medicine at Children’s National Medical Center is accepting applications for fellowship training in fetal medicine for the period starting July 2012.
Two levels of training are available:

One Year Clinical Fellowship
During this intensive one-year training program the trainee is immersed in the clinical evaluation and management of fetal conditions across the entire spectrum from primary genetic to acquired environmental conditions. In addition to this broad-based training, the fellow receives focused training and supervision in the prenatal aspects of their primary specialty. The training primarily focuses on prenatal pediatrics, but may also include sessions in high-risk obstetrics and maternal fetal medicine.
Training also includes coordination of high-risk deliveries and immediate critical care management of the complex transitional period. The trainee will undergo training in state-of-the-art fetal diagnostic techniques including fetal ultrasound and MRI, in addition to bedside training in the evaluation and management of fetal conditions undergoing complicated transition. No in-house call is associated with this program. Modest amounts of on-page call is expected. Moonlighting is not permitted during this fellowship.

Two-Year Clinical Research Fellowship
This training track is for candidates who plan to pursue an academic career in fetal medicine, and who have a goal of establishing independently funded research careers.
During the first year of fellowship, the trainee is exposed to all aspects of prenatal pediatrics consistent with a schedule that also incorporates intensive training in basic research methodology, and higher level training in the application and interpretation of specialized fetal diagnostics.
The trainee is expected to design a research study in line with his/her longer term research goals, under the supervision of a primary mentor and members of the Children’s Research Institute. This research study forms the basis of training during the second year of fellowship.
During the second year the trainee focuses primarily on his/her research study and begins to generate data towards applying for independent funding by the end of this fellowship. Trainees entering the two-year fellowship are assigned a primary mentor/supervisor and have access to specialized support in biostatistics and data management. No in-house call is associated with this program. On-page call is occasional during the first year and minimal during the second year. Moonlighting is not permitted during this fellowship.
Contracts
The two fellowships begin in July 2012.
