Is it a requirement to have an MD or a PhD to apply?
This fellowship is designed to foster innovation. While an MD or a PhD are preferred, candidates with any graduate degree could be considered if their application demonstrates a dedication to innovation in biomedical research, pediatrics, or surgery.

Is this fellowship a paid position?
Please call 202-476-4321 or email robertfellows@childrensnational.org for specific questions related to benefits of the fellowship program. Compensation will be at the level of PGY7 to 8 surgical trainees.

Is the fellowship open only to U.S. citizens and/or those with a current visa?
Non-U.S. citizens are encouraged to apply, but their participation will be contingent on their ability to secure a student visa.

Can I choose which projects I work on?

In some cases, especially in our Minimally Invasive Surgery track, Fellows will have some influence on the projects they work on. However, to gain the full spectrum of knowledge about medical innovation, fellows will work on several projects in the course of the program at various stages of development.

What if I already have an idea I’d like to develop?
The Robert Fellows program is designed to teach Fellows innovation in medicine from start to finish, and so it is most effective for all Fellows to work on the same projects simultaneously. However, as an integral part of the team at the Sheikh Zayed Institute, you will have access to experts in the field who may be able to help you refine your vision as an extracurricular activity.
