About Graduate Medical Education

Sponsoring Institution

Children’s National Medical Center, a non-profit academic health center governed by a community Board, is the only free-standing health care facility exclusively for children in the Washington-Baltimore Metropolitan area. Children’s National serves as the regional referral center for pediatric emergency, trauma, cancer, cardiac and critical care as well as neonatology, orthopedic surgery, neurology, and neurosurgery, and its internationally recognized team of pediatric professionals care for more than 360,000 patients each year. Children’s National recently opened a new 200-bed patient tower, and inpatient medical records are fully electronic with plans for phase-in of outpatient records in the near future.

Most of Children’s physicians are faculty members at George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences (GWUSMHS), and Children’s National serves as a major teaching affiliate for GWU’s medical school as well as a major training site for adult medical and surgical graduate medical education programs from GWU and other area institutions. The Children’s National medical staff comprises the Department of Pediatrics for GWU, with the Chief Academic Officer serving as the Department Chair. Currently, Children’s National providers are involved in over 250 research projects, conducted through the Children’s Research Institute (CRI). Total grant portfolio is $60 million, and it ranks sixth nationally for NIH funding among children’s hospitals.
