Web-based Training

The EMSC National Resource Center (NRC) now offers flexible, EMSC-focused training online that is convenient and available 24 hours a day to meet the participant’s lifestyle.

In general, the courses are all self-paced and should take approximately 60 to 90 minutes to complete, depending on the course selected. Participants may enter and exit a course at any time, then re-enter to complete the course at their convenience. The participant can not leave the course while taking the post-test.

Before entering a course, the participant will be prompt to complete an online registration form.  The registration process is simple, asks only a couple of questions and will take less than a minute to complete.

The NRC is currently seeking continuing education (CE) hours for the courses it offers. Until then, participants are encouraged to work with their own institutions for CEs. Upon completion of the course and post-test, participants will be given the opportunity to print out a "Certificate of Completion," which can be used as proof of course completion.

NRC courses currently available:

1. Family Presence in the Emergency Department (primarily targeting emergency department nurses, this course includes three modules: evidence for family presence (FP), introduction to FP, and implementation of a FP program.) 

2. Pediatric Disasater Planning and Preparedness (primarily targeting emergency management officials, EMS responders, hospital personnel, and school management personnel, this course includes five modules: Why Disaster Planning for Children Is Needed; Accessing Community Risk for Disasters Involving Children; Preparing the Community for Disasters Involving Children; Responding to Disasters Involving Children (Assessment/Triage); and Responding to Disasters Involving Children (Resuscitation/Treatment.)

EMSC Grantee Online Training Programs/Websites

1. AftertheInjury.org, Children's Hospital of Philadelphia EMSC Targeted Issue grantee (a website designed to help parents learn what to expect and what they can do to help their child recover from an injury. This online parent resource provides healthcare professionals an alternative way to communicate to parents who, at the time of injury, may not be able to absorb all that there is to know.)

2. EMSC Partnership Course, University of New Mexico EMSC Targeted Issue grantee (primarily targeting prehospital EMS personnel, this online training program includes eight modules: pediatric seizures, diabetes, blunt chest trauma, methamphetamine, child abuse/Down Syndrome, technological dependent, Shaken Baby Syndrome, and poisoning/toxic exposure)

3. Pediatric Disaster Online Courses, Tennessee EMSC (six courses target healthcare professions - Children with Special Needs: Considerations for Healthcare Professionals; Disaster Preparedness for Schools; Preparing for Explosion and Blast injuries; Responding to Bioterrorism; Responding to Chemical Incidents; and Responding to Radiation Disasters - and two courses target the general public - Family Preparedness and Family Preparedness Supplement: Children with Special Needs.

4. Pediatric Moderate Sedation, Illinois EMSC (targeting all health care providers who care for children, this course addresses: principles and standards underlying safe and effective pediatric moderate sedation, reviews commonly used sedating/analgesic agents, reviews potential pediatric complications, and highlights adjuncts to sedation.)

5. Virtual School Nurse and EMS Learning Project, University of New Mexico EMSC Targeted Issue grantee (primarily targeting school nurses, this online training program includes 12 modules: emergency preparedness, EMS continuim of care, school emergency preparedness, assessment and triage, airway management, emergency care of the spine, musculoskeletal emergency care, assessment, and two scenario-based modules.)

6. A Multi—Systems Approach to Pediatric Trauma Course, University of New Mexico. (targeting all healthcare providers, this online course includes six modules addressing trauma to different body systems in children: the head, neck, spine, abdomen, and chest.)
