The International Center to Heal Our Children Building Healthy Minds and Futures
Children’s National Medical Center established the International Center to Heal Our Children (ICHOC) in November 2001 to help foster, promote, and maintain the emotional health of children traumatized by acts of terrorism, violence, or disasters.
Inspired by the need to address the long-term psychological consequences of disasters, ICHOC serves children nationwide, and internationally. Our aim is to help all children heal from traumatic experiences and prepare them to better cope with potential future events.
ICHOC Resources for Families, Health Providers, and Communities
Throughout the world, the images and experiences of war, natural disasters, community violence, and terrorism are permanently etched in the minds of children. Many children are left feeling confused, worried, and frightened.
The ICHOC provides information, training, and outreach to communities coping with traumatic events. Staffed by a team of internationally trained pediatric mental health and public health experts, the ICHOC offers resources to professionals and parents as they work together toward helping children heal.
We educate and empower communities with the tools needed to identify and treat the symptoms of trauma. To date, well over 60,000 English and Spanish versions of the Handbook of Frequently Asked Questions Following Traumatic Events were distributed (hardcopy) and downloaded.
The handbook is part of an extensive collection of resources for parents and families, health professionals, and community organizations. Follow this link to access online resources or contact us for assistance and information.
