Pre-Operative Care Clinic - Referral Guidelines Patients with complex medical issues, special needs, and other circumstances should be referred to POCC to ensure appropriate considerations are taken prior to surgery. Pediatricians or a parent can contact the team at 202-476-POCC (202-476-7622).
Patients with the following conditions should be evaluated through the clinic:
- Complex heart Disease
- Serious respiratory disease, such as severe asthma or cystic fibrosis, or patients requiring a ventilator or oxygen at home
- Pierre Robin or Goldenhaar syndrome, or patients who have had difficulty with placement of a breathing tube in the past
- Muscular dystrophy or progressive weakness of another cause
- Poorly controlled diabetes, diabetes insipidus, or a metabolic disorder
- Dialysis – renal or peritoneal
- Liver disease
- Seizures that are difficult to control
- A history of serious complications of anesthesia
- Sickle cell disease, hemophilia, or other blood disorders
- Special ethical issues, such as religious objection to blood usage
- A history of major complications with anesthesia
- Any patient whose family or physician feels they would benefit
