Hepatology Program

Children’s National’s Hepatology Program aims to identify, evaluate and treat children with a variety of liver diseases. Children’s National offers weekly clinics for patients and their families. The experienced team of pediatric gastroenterologists works closely with other divisions, including Radiology, Laboratory Medicine, Anesthesiology, and Pathology to ensure each child’s condition is effectively managed.

Conditions treated in the Hepatology Program include:
  • Biliary atresia
  • Neonatal hepatitis
  • TPN-related hepatitis
  • Infectious hepatitis (such as hepatitis B and C)
  • Autoimmune hepatitis
  • Metabolic hepatitis (such as Wilson’s Disease)
  • Acute liver failure
  • Drug-related hepatitis
  • Steatohepatitis (fatty liver)
Additionally, Children’s National’s Hepatology Program routinely follows patients who are listed for liver transplantation or have already received transplantation.

Children’s advanced team offers radiologic studies, including sonograms, Magnetic Resonant Cholangiograms (MRCP) and liver biopsies, as necessary. - Departments & Programs - Children's National Medical Center
