Reference Laboratory Services


The Reference Laboratory at Children’s National Medical Center serves as a resource for clinical investigators across the nation who require expertise in specific laboratory testing for their grants and contracts.

Tandem mass spectrometry is used for:
  • Levateracetam
  • Estradiol
  • Estriol
  • Estrone
  • DEHP, MEHP and plasticizer metabolites
  • GM1, GM2 in CSF
Our mass spectroscopy expertise extends to other metabolic disorders which includes tests for:
  • VMA, HVA on diaper spots (neuroblastoma)
  • Acylcarnitine, total and free carnitine
  • Phenyl acetate, phenyl butyrate analysis
  • Organic acid quantification
  • Amino acid quantification
  • Other unique tests include:
  • Red blood cell antigen phenotyping using molecular techniques
