Camp Connect
Building Self Esteem for Kids with Tourette Syndrome
Children’s Camp Connect (CCT) located in Buckeystown, Maryland, offers children and teens with Tourette Syndrome (ages 7-15), seven days and six nights of summer fun and social connections. Camp Connect is sponsored by Children’s National Medical Center in collaboration with Tourette Syndrome Association of Greater Washington (TSAGW).
Camp Connect and all of the camps developed by Children’s National Medical Center serve to reduce the stigma and isolation that is often associated with neurological disorders and chronic health conditions. The camps also provide parents with respite.
For several years, these condition specific camps have proven to be an effective way for children to learn more about their condition and to develop adaptive behaviors. At all of Children’s Camps – Connect, New Friends and Great Rock – children learn from peers and adult volunteers who live effectively with these same health conditions and are offered hope for the future.
The camps allow children ages 7 to 16 to:
- establish social connections;
- obtain emotional support from others (children and adults) with the same condition;
- learn to understand their disorder and manage it effectively
- build self-advocacy, self-worth, and gain independence
Campers participate and choose from activities including team sports, hiking, arts and crafts, canoeing, a low and high ropes confidence course, camp Olympics, swimming, yoga, and drama. Support groups and educational programs promote knowledge, skill development and social connections.
