General and Thoracic Surgery
Children’s pediatric surgeons perform thousands of surgeries annually, and are leaders in the use of innovative and minimally invasive techniques to minimize pain and recovery time for patients.
Children’s surgical team performs more pediatric surgeries than anyone else in the Washington, DC, area, from hernias to complex tumors. Children’s pediatric surgical team performs general surgical procedures and the full range of pediatric surgical specialists in critical care, gastroenterology, neonatology, and oncology.
Children’s National is the region’s only freestanding hospital devoted exclusively to caring for kids, and the only hospital in region that guarantees your child’s anesthesia is administered by a fellowship-trained pediatric anesthesiologist at any time of the day or night – 24/7.
Experts in Pediatric Surgery
Children’s family-centered approach to caring for children has grown to become one of the most experienced and respected pediatric surgical programs in the world.
When your child needs surgery, Children’s National offers the most advanced and expert pediatric care for your child. Our team recognizes that each child is unique and requires a personalized care plan.
And because we are a hospital for children, parents and guardians have access to special support services before, during, and after their child’s procedure, including counseling assistance from social workers and child life specialists. The dedicated concierge coordinator for Surgical Care also ensures your needs are met, and we can coordinate a pre-surgical tour.
Our surgical facilities are designed with the family in mind, and waiting areas are close to operating rooms so you can stay close by during your child’s surgery.
The Parent’s Letter Project
Children’s National created the Parents Letter Project as a way for parents to help support each other by telling their own stories, in their own words for the benefit of other parents with a child at Children’s National. We encourage you to read letters from other families with a shared experience at the hospital — Read the stories from the Children’s Parent’s Letter Project.
Research at Children’s National Medical Center
In 2009, Children’s opened the Sheikh Zayed Institute for Pediatric Surgical Innovation at Children’s National Medical Center.
