The International Center to Heal Our Children: Building Healthy Minds and Futures

In response to the devastating earthquake in Haiti and the great need to support the emotional health of the children and families of Haiti, the International Center to Heal Our Children (ICHOC) has developed a fact sheet Helping Children with the Psychological and Emotional Aftermath of an Earthquake. The ICHOC is working with its partners, in collaboration, to help support the mental health needs of all children who have been impacted by the recent disaster.

The International Center to Heal Our Children (ICHOC): Building Healthy Minds and Futures helps children nationwide, and internationally, heal from traumatic experiences and prepare to better cope with potential future events. Our vision is to foster, promote, and maintain the emotional health of children who have been psychologically traumatized by acts of violence, disasters or terrorism.

Throughout the world, the images and experiences of war, natural disasters, community violence, and terrorism have been permanently etched in the minds of children. Many of them have been left feeling confused, worried and frightened.

Children's has established the ICHOC to provide information, training, and outreach to communities coping with traumatic events such as acts of violence, disasters, or terrorism.

With the establishment of the ICHOC, Children's National Medical Center seeks to educate and empower communities with the tools needed to identify and treat the symptoms of trauma. Staffed by a team of internationally trained pediatric mental health and public health experts, the ICHOC offers resources to professionals and parents as they work together toward helping children heal.

Since 2006, an increasing number of people have accessed information and resources provided by ICHOC in response to traumatic events around the world. Since 2005, there have been over 2.0 million hits on our web site. Approximately 60,000 English and Spanish versions of the Handbook of Frequently Asked Questions Following Traumatic Events were either distributed (hardcopy) or downloaded.
