Adolescent Medicine Trials Network (ATN)
The Adolescent Medicine Trials Network (ATN) for HIV/AIDS Interventions is a multi-center research network designed for adolescents and youth between 12 and 24 years of age. The primary mission of the (ATN) is to conduct research, both independently and in collaboration with existing research networks on promising behavioral, microbicidal, prophylactic, therapeutic, and vaccine modalities in HIV-infected and HIV-at-risk adolescents, ages 12 through 24 years. Children’s National Medical Center is one of 15 Adolescent Medicine Trials Units (AMTU) in the United States and Puerto Rico. Each AMTU site has the capacity to provide a wide array of adolescent-specific services by multidisciplinary clinical staffs in well established adolescent, HIV-care experienced clinical sites.
What kind of research studies?
The ATN will conduct research studies in the community and in the medical setting. Primary prevention studies in the community address behavioral, physical, and/or chemical efforts to interrupt HIV transmission in uninfected populations. Secondary prevention studies in the medical setting examine behavioral, nutritional, and/or pharmacologic/therapeutic interventions in order to preserve health in HIV-infected populations. Tertiary prevention studies evaluate strategies to restore ill HIV-positive adolescents and young people to full or better function, including preventing the transmission of HIV to others.
Why?
Studies have shown that at least one-half of all new HIV infections each year are happening to youth under 25. We need to figure out ways to work with young people to help youth protect themselves. Other studies have shown that HIV positive adolescents and youth may get more benefit from treatment than older people, but which drugs to use and how to use them in teens is not clear. And finally, when the time comes to test a HIV vaccine to prevent AIDS, youth have the right to be part of that study if they choose.
