Youth Connections Program
Estimates report there are more than 1500 HIV positive youth (13 – 24) living in Washington, DC. Many of these young people are not aware they are infected with the virus that causes AIDS. In addition, there are many young pepople who are HIV infected,aware of their diagnosis, yet still not connected to vital care and social support services.
Of the estimated 1500 HIV positive youth living in Washington, DC approximately 20% are linked to medical care.This leaves approximately 80% of the HIV positive teenagers and young adults in Washington, DC, not connected to medical care
YOUTH CONNECTIONS, a Ryan White Part D funded project, is focused on educating youth, their parents and/or caregivers as well as community medical providers, about the importance of encouraging young people to learn their HIV status through HIV counseling and testing. In addition, Youth Connections works to connect and/or re-connect those that are HIV positive to medical care and social support services.
The objectives of the Youth Connections program are accomplished through collaborative argeements between Children’s National Medical Center, five community-partnering agencies, and a network of Care Advocates
Partnering Sites:
Care Advocates:
- Are young adults selected and trained specifically to work with youth.
- They are employed and based at each of the five partner sites as well as CNMC.
- They are skilled as HIV pre and post test counselors.
- They are able to help young people see the value of learning their HIV status.
- They are available to support young people through the HIV testing process.
- They work closely with primary care providers in the community to link newly diagnosed HIV positive youth to medical care and support services.
