Neonatal Nutrition Team
Neonatal nutrition is a specialized service coordinated through Children’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), the only level IIIC NICU in the immediate Washington, DC, area. The NICU’s dedicated neonatal nutrition support dietitians work closely with the NICU medical team to evaluate all factors affecting the growth and nutrition of our neonates with special needs.
U.S.News & World Report ranks Children's Division of Neonatology among the top ten programs of its kind. The division earned this distinction because of our expertise in the field and because of our family-centered approach to care.
Children’s Division of Neonatology, which manages the NICU, is one of the leading programs in the country, is ranked in the top 10 by U.S.News & World Report, and serves as the primary neonatal referral center for more than 40 hospitals throughout the region.
Specialists for our Smallest Patients
Nutrition is critical for your newborn’s physical growth as well as mental development. High-risk neonates and premature infants whose fragile systems are still developing may need intravenous (IV) nutrition or enteral nutrition (tube feeding) to meet their nutritional needs, until the time when the child is able to transition to oral feeding if possible.
The dietitians are an integral part of the medical team in the NICU and are available to assist with questions or concerns that you may have regarding your baby’s nutritional needs and care. Children’s neonatal nutritionists assist in:
|• Assessing nutrition laboratory values
• Evaluating growth
| • Monitoring fluid and electrolyte balance
• Monitoring medication
