Hospitalist Research
The Hospitalist team has several research projects underway:
- Time-motion study of hospitalists to determine where the use of technology and ancillary support services can enhance time spent in direct patient care
- Study to determine whether focused faculty development workshops can improve hospitalist performance in education and family centered care, using performance on pre and post standardized simulated teaching sessions scored by standardized learners and patients as the outcome measure
- Use of a computer program to enhance the clinical reasoning ability of medical students and residents
- Assessment of the effectiveness of hospitalist co-management of medically complex surgical patients
- Enhancing the education of pediatric residents, hospitalist fellows and faculty in the care of medically complex, technology dependant patients through a monthly seminar series
- Assessment of nebulizer vs MDI/spacer use in patients hospitalized with asthma
- Use of a web site on pediatric advocacy to enhance resident knowledge of resources for chronically ill or disadvantaged children and their families
- Hospitalists’ role in global health initiatives and resident education in global health
- Hospitalists’ role in direct observation of resident communication and interpersonal skills
- Teaching residents about palliative care
- Teaching medical students reflective practice through literature and writing
- Ethical dilemmas in hospitalist practice
