Our family-centered clinical care, leadership in preeminent research, and exceptional opportunities for patients to participate in clinical trials distinguish the Oncology Division at Children’s National Medical Center.
Patients and families benefit from the division’s cancer-specific programs, which focus on providing the best care for each child. Children’s National is one of the few hospitals in the nation with comprehensive teams that specialize in treating patients with a particular type of cancer, such as leukemia, solid tumors and brain tumors. From the doctors and nurses to the social workers, all staff members of each program are experts in treating patients with that exact cancer type. Children’s National is the leading pediatric cancer center in the Washington, DC, area. The Division of Oncology diagnoses and cares for more than 200 patients annually—more than the number of children treated by all area hospitals combined.
Your Child’s Care Team
Division Chief Jeffrey Stuart Dome, MD, is recognized internationally for his work in Wilms tumors, the most common form of kidney cancer in children. Dr. Dome and the entire dedicated oncology team—doctors, nurses, social workers, pharmacists, psychologists, and art therapists—support you, your child, and family, throughout your child’s treatment at Children’s National.

Patient and Family-Focused Care
Children’s comprehensive care involves the entire family. The division’s concierge service makes sure your needs are met, and the Patient and Family Support Program provides counseling services and related assistance for all patients, parents, and siblings.
Through the Patient and Family Support Program, social workers, child development specialists, psychologists, art therapists, and chaplains, provide a variety of therapeutic interventions and activities to help parents and children cope with illness.

Research and Clinical Trials
Children’s National plays an active role in childhood cancer research, education, and advocacy. Through participation in more than 100 clinical trials, Children’s National strives not only to cure cancer, but to minimize the side effects of treatment. Our oncology specialists are pioneers in research, leading studies to define new treatment protocols and discover new therapies.
More than 30 of our specialists partner with the National Institutes of Health to research state-of-the-art techniques to battle cancer. Children’s is the only center in the region—and one of only a handful in the country—with access to the Pediatric Brain Tumor Consortium’s protocols and the CureSearch Children’s Oncology Group Phase I clinical trials, the world’s largest cancer research collaborative.
Faculty members serve as study chairs for several national and international clinical trials in acute leukemia, brain tumors, renal tumors, bone tumors, and other solid tumors.
Additionally, our lymphoma and leukemia patients have access to the most current therapies through the Division of Oncology Lymphoma/Leukemia Program. This clinical trial cooperative group, supported by the National Cancer Institute, researches the causes of cancer and initiates new treatments used in practice.
