Comprehensive Hemophilia and Thrombosis Center
At Children’s National, we understand that kids just want to be kids. For all of our patients, part of care is helping children and teens, especially those with a chronic condition, live lives that are as close to normal as possible.
Each year, the Comprehensive Hemophilia and Thrombosis Center treats more than 200 children and teens with bleeding, clotting, and platelet disorders. We also educate patients and their families about managing these conditions from the patient’s perspective, not a one-size-fits-all approach. This means that your kid can still be a kid.
Children’s Experts
The center takes a multidisciplinary approach in diagnosing, evaluating, and treating bleeding and thrombotic disorders, and care is comprehensive. The center’s extensive team includes members from a wide range of specialties:

Our center specialists care for children and teens with chronic disorders, and help patients recover from acute conditions, including treatment for more than 25 patients with idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP) annually. Conditions we care for include the following.
Inherited or acquired bleeding disorders
• Hemophilia
• Von Willebrand disease
Platelet disorders
• Idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP)
• Giant platelet syndromes
• Newborn thrombocytopenia

Although strokes in children are rare, children with certain disorders may be at a higher risk. Children’s National has the expertise to recognize and care for young stroke patients. Early intervention and treatment is critical, and the center has a dedicated pediatric stroke team with experts in neurology, intensive care, neurosurgery, hematology, radiology, pharmacy, and rehabilitation.
Support for Patients and Families
If your child has a bleeding or clotting disorder, learning how to manage the disorder is important, and we can help. The center’s education programs explain how to manage a condition, especially when patients are outside of a medical setting. For patients who need to continue their therapy at home, we also teach families how to perform home infusion therapy.
Related support for patients and their families is available through the Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders Patient and Family Support Program. The program provides comprehensive mental health and psychosocial services and resources for all patients, their parents, and siblings.
Research at Children’s National
Children’s National is dedicated to finding new and more effective therapies for bleeding and clotting disorders. Center specialists participate in scientific investigations and clinical trials with Children’s Research Institute, the National Institutes of Health, and the Centers for Disease Control’s Universal Data Collection Project, which monitors the nation’s blood supply.
